Angus Farquhar

Biography

There is no greater honour than to help mark someone’s life with a fitting personal service or to help a couple share their marriage, with all those they care for, in their own way. It is a wonderful journey to work with a couple to bring their imagination of their ceremony to reality with simple joy, celebration and depth at the same time.

As well as being a celebrant, I direct an arts organisation specialising in staging unusual events in unusual places. Over the last 25 years, the work took thousands of people up mountains, down gorges and on choreographed runs in light suits all over the world! Closer to home, I started the Beltane Fire Festival in Edinburgh and am currently working on Glasgow Requiem in the Necropolis (www.aproxima.co.uk). What I like most is working together to find ways to create powerful ritual moments, whatever the scale.

It is a privilege to help a couple develop their marriage  in the unique way they really dreamt of doing. As Celebrate People celebrants we help make ceremonies that truly capture the spirit and character of a much-loved person or the real expression of love between two people.

Wonderful experience with a very special celebrant!

We had such a fantastic wedding celebration at Cambo House this summer, made all the more special by working with Angus to create a unique, thoughtful and meaningful ceremony.

Angus has a wonderful calm energy, taking time to get to know us as a couple, inviting reflection on our relationship and what matters to us / for the day, and guiding us through the process to prepare for our big day. Angus really made us feel at ease given we were both quite nervous about the spotlight being on us. We loved Angus’ considered approach to crafting a ceremony, readings and words that felt really “us” with a real connection to nature, family and our independent spirits! Angus was also very accommodating and supportive of the various rituals we wanted to incorporate like hand fasting, ring warming and drinking from the quaich.

Our guests all remarked on how special and fun the ceremony and in particular how this was brought to life by Angus’ humour, kindness and expert delivery. Thank you so much Angus! Couldn’t have gone better – highly recommend!

Wonderful celebrant - heart, spirit, humour, beauty - highly recommended

Angus was(/is) incredible. He is a long-time family friend who we had seen in action at Dai and Jackie’s wedding – see their review below – and seeing the way in which he celebrated their love and and connection to each other – and those present – was an inspiration.

On our wedding day, the beautiful words and poetry which he shared during our ceremony – and the way in which he held the space for us, our stories and our commitments to each other – truly helped to cast a spell over everyone as the magic of the day took hold.

Angus’ calming energy, laced with heart and humour, was exactly the vibe we needed to feel grounded – especially so the day prior when nerves were high, as we went through the rehearsal. And the chance for Helyn and I to reflect so intentionally on our relationship in prep for the day was a blessing. We’ll be drawing energy from the day indefinitely – unforgettable.

With deep love and gratitude,

Sam Helyn

Excellent celebrant

November 9, 2023

Angus was an excellent celebrant. He guided us giving us ideas and suggestions during the preparation process, and he was very friendly and easy to chat to, and it felt like of we knew him already. We were a bit overwhelmed planning so much for the wedding in a short length of time, and Angus helped us making this part of the process much easier.

He also speaks Italian which helped in order

to translate some sections to help our Italian relatives to follow the ceremony.

During the ceremony Angus was excellent, very proactive making sure he would coordinate with the musicians.

He brought a very lively and friendly energy to the ceremony, and his way of speaking is very engaging. We also felt very comfortable bringing our way of spirituality, and Angus was very open minded about our way of celebrating our ritual. He also brought a beautiful Celtic poem and blessings that gave a nice Scottish touch which is what we wanted as our families came from abroad to celebrate.

We enjoyed our marriage ceremony very much, and we are very grateful to Angus.

It was Fantastic! (So was Angus by the way!)

I saw Angus in Action at a friend’s wedding – see Doris’ review – and was inspired by the humanist approach and the way it was delivered. Angus led us through the preparations and his guidance, patience and humour allowed us to prepare a very personal, meaningful and uplifting mix of words, poems and music.

Jackie and I are in the second flush of youth – we’ve been together for over 15 years so the usual trappings and excesses mean little to us. We couldn’t have wished for more. Money cannot buy the love that filled the room that day.

I overheard a group of people talking about the evening and all were inspired to the extent they wnted to renew their vows in a humanist ceremony.

We’ll remember that day and Angus’ input forever!

Couldn’t have asked for anybody better!

October 25, 2023

Angus was recommended to us through a friend, he was the celebrant at her sisters wedding and there were nothing but positive things to be said. Leading up to the wedding and for the big day itself we can see exactly why this was and can add on ourselves now nothing but good words!

We wanted a personal humanist ceremony, something unique to us and that gave a story as to why we had chose this and what everything that was going into the wedding meant to us. Angus gave us guidance and tips to help from the initial meeting and leading into the wedding itself couldn’t have been more useful!

Every detail we needed or asked was explained thoroughly and we had so many compliments from family and friends after stating how good Angus was in delivering the ceremony for us.

Thank you again, it will literally be a day we remember forever!

Great Celebrant, Great Guy.

Couldn’t have asked for a better celebrant than Angus. He was great!

We decided to have a small wedding in Scotland, having never been there and not having any friends or family in the country. It was a daunting task, but Angus was a great help in making it happen. We doubt it would have gone so well without him! He advised us on locations (and did some scouting), explained legal requirements, arranged a witness, and helped us structure our ceremony. Honestly, we asked a lot of Angus. Yet he was always ready to help, and really did make our wedding day into a wedding instead of what could have been two fools standing in the Highlands getting eaten by midges…He warned us about the midges too. We appreciated it.

Couldn't have been more perfect!!

My partner and I knew we wanted to have a humanist ceremony from the beginning, and having Angus as the person marrying us couldn’t have been better. Not only is Angus a close family friend, but he also got married in the same location, our family’s garden, which was very special.

Angus made a lot of time to speak with us both in order to fully understand what we wanted from a ceremony. He pointed us in directions, advised, and helped us to think about both our ceremony and marriage in ways we hadn’t previously. The focus always being love and joy, and ensuring we were doing it in a way which felt right for us. In particular, Angus’ experience helped us to achieve the structure a ceremony needs, whilst swapping more orthodox aspects for the personal, non-traditional elements we wanted to include.

We also sadly experienced 2 postponements due to covid, which Angus helped and supported us through. As we had to move the wedding twice, preparing yourself emotionally for the day again was challenging. Angus helped us use the extra time productively, framing the delays as opportunities that ensured we could create the day we wanted.

For both of us, our wedding day was the best of our lives. The ceremony was the centre of the day, and Angus was at the centre of the ceremony. We couldn’t be happier that it was him, or more thankful for the contributions he made to realise it all. Thank you!
